With such a title you must wonder, what does it mean? There is no question that the action and supernatural TV series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. responds accordingly to its genre. Betrayal, secrets, power, and the never-ending war between evil vs. good are present in every episode but recurring romantic tragedies keep popping up. A few relationships development between the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. takes me back to one of the classic Shakespearean tragedies: Romeo and Juliet.
If you are a fan or have watched most of the episodes you might understand what I’m talking about. Skye & Ward, Daisy & Lincoln, May & Coulson, May & Andrew, Jemma & Daniels, Jemma & Fitz, Mack, and Yo-Yo have been in constant despair because of the circumstances surrounding their love status. The saying: “Love conquers all” rarely applies.
Skye and Ward were divided by betrayal. Daisy and Lincoln were separated by death. May and Coulson, although united by an extreme loyalty are not romantically together because of their duty to the cause. May and Andrew, trauma caused by a mission prevented them from staying together and when they tried again, Lash took over. Jemma and Fitz have been in love since always but fear and the supernatural keep them apart. Jemma and Daniel’s relationship was from another planet. And finally, Mack and Yo-Yo are struggling with shadows from the past and troubles of the present. In a moment of rage, Fitz tells Jemma: “we are cursed, the bloody cosmos wants us to be apart”, and it seems true not only for them.
The only ones that have ‘apparently’ managed to keep the tragedy away are Bobbi and Hunter, and it’s just because they were forced out of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As Shakespeare depicted in his Romeo and Juliet tragedy, two forces oppose the union between loved ones. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. translates these forces as the eternal battle between good and evil. Will these characters ever get the chance to be truly happy and together?
